Addict's killer mom dumps agent

By Helen Bamford

Ellen Pakkies, who was convicted of strangling her tik-addicted son, has dumped her agent as she is unhappy with the agreement they signed.

She said she didin't feel it was right for him to cash in on her heartbreaking story.

In January 2009 she signed a contract with Anthony Hall, founder of Recovering Addicts Empowering Lives (RAEL), which gave him and his organisation 40 percent of any financial gains she made.

This week she discovered that Hall and Christa Prinsloo, a senior reporter with the Son newspaper, had e-mailed a drug rehabilitation centre in the Strand, quoting R3 000 for her to give a talk.

But Prinsloo said she only sent the e-mail as a favour to Hall because his computer was broken and Hall said it was never his mission to make money out of Pakkies.

The e-mail, sent to Shaamiel Davids, director of the Western Cape Therapeutic Community Centre, read: "The cost would be R3 000 in order to cover travelling expenses as well as paying Mrs Pakkies, as she has no other income at present due to the time constraints of fulfilling her community service."

It was signed "Ms CJ Prinsloo (on behalf of Anthony Hall - founder of RAEL)".

Davids said he was shocked to receive the e-mail soliciting money. He contacted Pakkies, only to find out she had no knowledge of any fee being charged.

Pakkies, who received a suspended sentence for murdering her son Adam in September 2007, was ordered to do 280 hours of community service.
